How our pots are made

Our pots begin with a carefully developed clay blend, combining Yorkshire clay from a local quarry with clay sourced from Stoke-on-Trent. Both are British materials, chosen for their strength and durability, and together they create a frostproof body suitable for use outdoors all year round.

We process our clay on site, carefully pressing, filtering and preparing it to ensure consistency and quality. Broken pots and excess clay are recycled back into the process wherever possible, helping us minimise waste and make the most of our materials.

Each pot is given its initial form using specialist equipment before being passed to our skilled team. At this stage, every piece is hand-finished on the wheel, where it is carefully shaped into our distinctive profiles — from classic bellied forms to practical kitchen designs — giving each pot its character and balance.

Decorative details are added by hand, using traditional techniques and a practiced eye. Features such as piecrust rims or applied bands of clay are carefully attached and shaped using nimble finger movements, ensuring each detail feels intentional and refined.

Pots are dried slowly for up to a week using recycled heat from our kiln. Once leather-hard, each piece is hand fettled to ensure a smooth finish, clean edges and no sharp points before firing.

For glazed pots, a white engobe base layer is hand-painted onto the surface before glazing. Pieces are then either hand-glazed by Marie or finished in our spray booth, depending on the design. 

Pots are fired to 1100°C on large kiln beds using a rail track system, vitrifying the clay and making each piece strong, durable and frostproof. Once fired and cooled, pots are carefully checked, labelled and stored before being dispatched to garden centres or prepared for online delivery.
